I was particularly taken by Schubert's Sonata for Arpeggione, written for a now virtually extinct instrument (the bowed guitar) but which goes extremely well on the cello. But the Schubert sonata is not the star of this CD. They were originally paired with Britten's cello/piano sonata, now aptly coupled with the composer's first two solo cello suites, performed again by Rostropovich, an indispensable disc for any Britten and/or Rostropovich admirer (Cello Suites). The most lovely part of the album is the duo's performance of the Schubert "Arpeggione" sonata. This recital at the Jubilee Hall on 7 July 1961 began with Schubert’s ‘Arpeggione’ Sonata, which Rostropovich had learnt at Britten’s behest. Adagio.
