The Katahdin Saddle Trail as seen leading away from the summit, which circles down to Chimney Pond but also connects with the Cathedral Trail and trails leading to Hamlin Peak. Saddle: This is a partial trail leading from Chimney Pond to the summit.

Hamlin Ridge : This DOES NOT lead to the summit of Mount Katahdin. It was 9:42 am and we were heading up the Saddle Trail which would get us to Baxter Peak (Katahdin) in 2.2 more miles. We limit access to Katahdin to protect natural resources and a wilderness experience. From the Katahdin summit, this is the view of Hamlin Ridge. Once you reach the saddle, turn left and follow the thin easy trail to Baxter Peak (summit).

The trail climbs through birch and spruce-fir woods, up rocky footing to more scrub like growth, towards an awesome natural phenomenon called the Saddle Slide. This is a very strenuous climb no matter which trailhead you chose.. It is a partial trail leading from Chimney Pond to Hamlin Peak (4,756 feet/ 1,450 meters).

Dad had previously hiked Katahdin via the Hunt Trail (11 mi R/T), and via the Helon Taylor, Knife Edge, Saddle, and Chimney Pond Trails (total R/T appx 10.2 mi), but this was daughter’s first ascent. If you’re hiking for the day and not staying at the park overnight, there are multiple trailheads at which to park and begin the hike, all of which require online reservations (parking areas are capped at a certain number of vehicles).
Katahdin Trail Descriptions Hiking Katahdin requires an elevation gain of around 4,000’. Distance from Chimney Pond is 2.2 miles. It angles towards the broad saddle between Baxter and Hamlin Peaks.

If you live in Maine or New England, summiting Baxter Peak on Katahdin is a definite for your outdoor adventure bucket list. Near the headwall, it steepens for a short ways and becomes mostly easy Class 3 up to the saddle.
