Without doubt, that’s the second most frequent question I receive from writers (right after where do I find a good editor? Just as betas play early versions of games and apps, or try out products before they’re put on the market, a Beta Reader tests your manuscript as a reader. You’ll thank me later. This group has over 6,000 vociferous members. Beta reading is not creating the feeling jealousy that I have always thought it might. If you don’t agree with a critique a beta reader has pointed out, take a step back and put that critique in context. This is a group for free beta readers and free critiques.
A beta reader is someone who reads your story before it is published. - think of an online creative writing course (or online songwriting course, singing course, photogrphy course, film course, etc.). First to Read. If you’ve been researching beta readers online, you’ve probably seen posts that suggest finding beta readers in writers’ groups or critique groups.

Before you eagerly drop your literary work of art on an unsuspecting Beta, let me give a couple ground rules. This post was also shared over on the MS Edits blog.
Ensuring the person beta reading your work and leaving feedback is an avid fan/reader in your book’s genre is essential. People that give honest feedback, critique, and/or clarification on your latest masterpiece. This can be a tough question to answer for the simple reason that a beta reader or critique partner isn’t someone you simply vet and hire, like you would a freelance editor. I’ve been a member of a long-running critique co-op for a few years now, but also have a number of stable beta readers (and beta read for a few other authors as well). Their job is not to edit or critique. What is a beta reader and how to find one is brought to you by Fanni Sütő. I would say at least five. Obviously, there are quite a few writers offering their drafts for critique and I’ve noticed that many are met with enthusiastic responses.

It’s worth searching online for any groups that might have slipped through the net too, and you may well be able to find critique partners in any of the places listed for readers, or online groups like Critique Circle and Ladies Who Critique. Throughout your evaluation, please be as open and candid as possible—your feedback Rather than viewing your beta readers’ critiques as flaws or nitpicks, recognize them for what they are: the potential for improvement.
We don't recommend engaging family members, very close friends or significant others as your only beta readers. Some writers prefer to use beta readers or a combination of betas and critters.
Where can I find a beta reader or critique partner?
Some posts even suggest looking for “critique partners” on Goodreads or on other social media platforms (like Facebook groups that are dedicated to beta reading). Members can request to review the latest frontlist titles or can download backlist titles straight away. I have shied away from acting as a beta reader many times, and I have stopped attending critique groups. People who aren't too close to you personally.
A good beta reader is someone who is a reader first, not a writer, editor, or publisher.
